Makkah or Madinah First? Understanding Your Umrah Itinerary
Al Hidayah Travel UK · · 2 min read

There is no single itinerary for every traveller
Umrah itineraries can begin in Makkah or Madinah, depending on flight routes, package arrangements and personal preferences. The best order for you depends on the practical details of your journey and how you want to organise your time.
Starting in Makkah
Travellers who arrive through an airport serving the Makkah journey may need to enter Ihram before crossing the relevant Miqat, according to their route and circumstances. Learn where and when Ihram applies to your specific itinerary before flying. Do not leave this question until the last minute; ask your airline or travel specialist about the route and seek religious guidance if uncertain.
Starting in Madinah
Some travellers prefer to spend time in Madinah first, visiting Al-Masjid an-Nabawi and allowing themselves to settle in before travelling to Makkah. If your route later continues to Makkah, check the transport schedule and the Miqat arrangements for that journey. The correct preparation depends on your travel route.
Compare the practical details
Look at flight arrival times, hotel check-in, transfer duration, luggage arrangements and the number of nights in each city. An itinerary that appears convenient on paper may feel tiring if it involves a long journey immediately after an overnight flight. Consider the needs of older relatives and children when choosing the pace.
Make time for both cities
Makkah and Madinah offer different experiences for pilgrims. Plan time for worship and rest rather than trying to fit every activity into a tight schedule. If you want to take part in organised ziyarat, ask what is included, how long it takes and whether any additional costs apply.
Questions to ask before booking
Confirm the order of cities, hotel names, transfer arrangements, arrival and departure airports, and what support is available if travel plans change. Al-Hidayah Tours can help you review available package itineraries so that you understand the journey before you depart.
